The Government of India owns 75% of SAIL’s equity. However, they enjoy significant operational and financial autonomy by the virtue of the Maharatna status. They cater also to the needs of Railways with products like rails, wheels, axles, wheel sets as well as galvanised products and pig iron. They export mild steel and pig iron. SAIL products have berthed successfully in many countries like Japan, China, Korea, Singapore, Austraila, across Europe like Germany, France, Belgium and many neighbouring countries like Nepal, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and so on.

To penetrate the hinterland of the country, SAIL developed a Rural Dealership Scheme. They provide roofing materials and steel rebars maintaining contemporary dimensions of rural lifestyle.
